Nurture
Nurture groups are a small group of children within a school supported by the whole staff and parents/guardians. A nurture room offers a small class setting and a bridge between home and school, meeting children’s individual emotional needs. Our 'Sunshine' room led by Miss Workman and Mrs Allen provides this space for around 8 children every year from P2-P3. Lots of our teachers and classroom assistants are trained in nurture by Nurture UK, and our whole school is a 'nurturing school' underpined by the six principles of nurture; understanding that -
- Children’s learning is understood developmentally
- The classroom offers a safe base
- The importance of nurture for the development of self-esteem
- Language is a vital means of communication
- All behaviour is communication
- The importance of transition in children’s lives.
The nurture group aims to boost confidence and self-esteem and provide children with extra skills and independence for example:
- To engage
- To listen
- To share and take turns
- To accept losing a game
- Give opportunities to talk about and understand their feelings
- To experience and practice the development of positive relationships
We have been awarded the Marjorie Boxall Award for Nurture twice, for outstanding practice, most recently in 2024.
